The Charlotte Ideas Festival in partnership with Charlotte SHOUT! presents The Forum with Ingrid Fetell Lee on 'The Aesthetics of Joy.'

Ingrid Fetell Lee is a designer and author whose groundbreaking work reveals the hidden influence of our surroundings on our emotions and wellbeing. As a former design director at IDEO, author of Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness, and the founder of the website The Aesthetics of Joy, she empowers people to find more joy in life and work through design. Her immensely popular TED talk “Where Joy Hides and How to Find It” has been viewed more than 17 million times. Lee holds a Master’s in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing from Princeton University. She loves pancakes, polka dots, and rainbow sprinkles, and has an extensive repertoire of happy dances for any occasion.

About the Performers: We're thrilled to invite Nrityangan Cultural Academy to open and close this event with performances. Nrityangan Cultural Academy has been providing classical Kathak and modern Bollywood dance training for Charlotte area students ages 5 through adult for over 20 years. Founded in 2001 by Smt. Rituparna Mukherjee, NCA is affiliated with Pracheen Kala Kendra, a premier educational organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of fine arts. All students at Nrityangan participate in cultural festivals during the year including the Festival of India and their talents are also showcased in Nrityangan’s annual recital and fundraiser. Over a hundred dancers work together to tell a story and raise funds for local and global organizations and this year’s musical Bollywood Extravaganza is Yaariyaan, which will be performed Saturday May 6 at 4pm at Ovens Auditorium. The Forum has a three-part structure:

• First third: Participants connect and build relationships in small break-out groups prompted by a question;

• Middle third: Participants consider a presentation that ends with the speaker posing a community-facing question;

• Final third: Participants discuss the question, igniting new ideas and interactions.
